AVESS (Amputee Virtual Environment Support Space)

Remedy recently announced its work on the Amputee Virtual Environment Support Space which provides a virtual environment for military amputees and their families.

The project has generated significant coverage as a leading example of how immersive and virtual technologies can have health and other benefits.

Betterverse gave high praise to the project:

"I'm incredibly excited to see the fruits of this innovative use of virtual worlds.  Returning veterans with amputated limbs are a population that can make a very strong case for the public good possibilities of these digital tools."

Virtual Musings also commented on the appropriate use of virtual world technology:

"The project will explore the unique needs of veteran amputees who may also be suffering from PTSD among other ailments.  Much like the NCO Academy students, the amputees will have the opportunity to connect to other veteran amputees around the world in an immersive environment.  The project is a partnership between ADL Company Inc. (ADL) and Virtual Ability, Inc. (VAI), and it is funded by Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) of the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC).  It will certainly bear watching for interesting developments."

Pixels and Policy commented:

"The transition from military service to civilian life can be daunting, especially when that transition includes a lengthy medical rehabilitation and adjusting to life as an amputee. The military now seems keenly aware of the therapeutic powers of the Metaverse."
